About the port

Considered to be the world’s largest container port, the port of Hong Kong handled 18.3 million TEUs of containers in 2019. It is an important geographical node between Western operators into the Eastern trade routes and mainland China.

It provides close to 1200 container liner services monthly connecting over 400 destinations globally. One of the most efficient ports, the average turnaround time for container vessels in Hong Kong is just about 10 hours.

The terminals

The port of Hong Kong has its container terminals located in the Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi basin.

Kwai Tsing Container Terminal has 9 container terminals with container yards and freight stations. These terminals are operated by 5 companies: Modern Terminals Ltd. (MTL), Hongkong International Terminals Ltd. (HIT), COSCO Information & Technology (H.K.) Ltd. (COSCO), Dubai Port International Terminals Ltd. (DPI), and Asia Container Terminals Ltd. (ACT).

Spread over 279 hectares, it provides 24 berths for containers and has a handling capacity of more than 20 million TEUs annually. It offers dry dock, anchorages, repair, and maintenance for all types of vessels and containers. Recently, the port harbored HMM Gdansk, the world’s largest container vessel, on its maiden call at Kwai Tsing Container Terminal 7.

The port also has a dedicated terminal for river trade at Tuen Mun. It manages containers, break-bulk, and bulk cargo operations. The port of Hong Kong is the only port in the world to offer mid-stream operations i.e. loading and unloading containers from the vessels directly at sea, bringing down the high container handling fee at the terminals.

It also has Public Cargo Working Areas (PCWAs) allocating berths and waterfront working areas to vessels for loading and unloading cargo, bulk, and containerized cargo from barges.

The port also offers buoys, anchorages, port back-up facilities, typhoon shelters, and ship repair yards for vessels.

The Kwai Tsing Terminal handles nearly 77% of the container traffic, while the rest was handled at the river-trade terminal, mid-stream sites, PCWAs, etc.
